To disable SpamExperts for a Specific email address

1. Click the Mailbox Overview icon in the General section.
   

   

2. Switch to the Mailboxes tab
3. Click the + Add mailbox link.Enter the Mailbox name. Drop down the Filtered (Incoming) section and click No. Click Save to finish. This mailbox will no longer be filtered.

To disable SpamExperts for all email addresses

Option 1 – wildcard all mailboxes

1. Follow steps 1 and 2 above.
2. In step 3 enter * for the Mailbox name.

Option 2 – disable Filter mailboxes by default

1. Click the Mailbox Overview icon in the General section.
   

   

2. Within the Configuration tab untick Filter mailboxes by default.

If you have any mailboxes configured in the Mailboxes tab you’ll also need to ensure Filtered (incoming) is set to No for each of them. When you visit the Mailboxes tab you’ll need to click the Show Results button to list any configured mailboxes.

Option 3 – disable quarantine

1. Click the Filter Settings button within the Incoming – Protection Settings section.
   

   

2. Please take note of the warning displayed before completing the further steps:
3. Untick the Quarantine enabled checkbox.
   

   

4. Click the Save button at the bottom to confirm your changes.

SpamExperts is an system independent of our mail servers that filters email to remove Spam. It’s success rate is pretty high, but sometimes it might block something you’d like to receive and other times not block something you’d rather not.

There are a number of ways you can manage releasing email from SpamExperts quarantine, or reporting email as spam.

Accessing SpamExperts Dashboard via cPanel

SpamExperts Mobile App

SpamExperts provide a mobile app – available for both Apple and Android from their respective app stores. Please follow the instructions in SpamExperts own guide (external link opens in a new window) to setup the app. You’ll need to have created a SpamExperts domain or email user account in order to login to the app.

SpamExperts IMAP Mail Account

It’s possible to manage spam within you email client, by adding IMAP accounts.

You should use the following details:

Incoming Mail Server Name: strikemail.co.uk

IMAP Port: 993

Connection Security: SSL/TLS

Outgoing Mail Server Name: strikemail.co.uk

SMTP Port: 465

Connection Security: SSL/TLS

Your username and password will be as you setup in SpamExperts.

Once you’ve setup the mailbox you’ll see a number of folders:

Any email currently in Quarantine will be in the Caught folder.

You can drag emails between these folders.

So, if you see an email in Caught that is not spam and you want to just release it once – drag it to the Release folder – and it’ll be delivered to your email account.

If you want to Release and Train the spam filter – so future emails from the sender won’t be blocked – drag the email to the Release and Train folder.

Beware of the Spam and Not Spam folders – they do what they say on the tin – but they don’t release the email to your mailbox. Whatever you drag in to those folders will just help the filter for future emails.

SpamExperts Email Client Report Spam Add-ons

There is also an email client add-on available for Outlook.

SpamExperts is a system independent of our mail servers that we use to scan email. Typically SpamExperts works well out-of-the-box and you’ll not need to interact with it.

However, it is possible to login to SpamExperts in several ways – both through your cPanel or directly to the SpamExperts system. This guide describes one of those ways.

Direct access for a domain (full admin access to see traffic for all email addresses)

1. Login to the SpamExperts dashboard via the link in cPanel.
2. Click User’s Profile from the My Settings section of the left hand menu.
3. Enter and confirm a new password for full domain access. You’ll also need to add an email address.Click the Save button for this section.
   You’ll see a confirmation banner, and these fields now allow you to change the password that you just set.
4. Just below the Login Credentials section you’ll see options for enabling Two Factor Authentication (2FA) for this login and Notifications.
   If you’re familiar with using a 2FA app like Authy you can enable it here and add an extra layer of login protection – we strongly recommend making use of 2FA wherever it is available.
   You can choose to be notified should login be detected from a different location or different IP address.

   

5. To use this login you would visit the SpamExperts portal –
   https://strikemail.co.uk (link to Strikemail server opens in a new window)
   and login with the the domain as the username and the password you just set.You’ll be logged in as the Domain User and see the same dashboard as shown in Step 2 above – as if you’d logged in via cPanel.

Direct access for an email address

1. Login to the Strikemail dashboard via the link above.
2. Click Manage email users from the Users & Permissions section of the left hand menu and then click Add to add a new email user.
   

3. Enter the username part of the email address, along with a password and confirmation.
   Click Save to add the SpamExperts user.
4. To use this login you would visit the SpamExperts portal –
   https://strikemail.co.uk (link to StrikeMail server opens in a new window)
   and login with the the email address as the username and the password you just set.You’ll be logged in as an Email User.

These email account logins can also be used to manage spam in other ways, including in your email client (where you can also see Quarantined emails and manage the training and releasing spam) as well as Android and Apple apps.

SpamExperts allows you to configure rules that override the spam filter for selected recipients and senders. It is important to note that this rule only turns off the content filtering. If the senders mail server is badly configured, does not comply with open standards, or is itself listed on a real-time blacklist then it will not be possible to whitelist (blacklisting always works).

Rules which block are known as Blacklisting and rules which allow are called Whitelisting. You can block or allow either by providing a fully email address e.g. john.smith@example.com, or by simply adding the domain name e.g. example.com – the latter would block or allow ALL traffic related to a certain domain.

Whilst SpamExperts has significant additional filtering options and rule lists, this article just focusses on Sender rules for Whitelisting (allowing) and blacklisting (rejecting). Sender in SpamExperts is the originator of the external email.

Accessing the Sender whitelist and blacklist

There are two ways to add Senders (the remote email address) to a blacklist or whitelist. You can either click on the Sender whitelist or Sender blacklist buttons from the dashboard, and then + Add whitelist sender or + Add blacklist sender

or you can use the Delivery log view and use the drop-down next to the email, and select Blacklist or Whitelist sender.

This article will show you how to access SpamExperts Email Protector and check your delivery logs. The logs can help you determine if a message was received at all by the SpamExperts filters, and whether or not the message was treated as spam.

Accessing the mail delivery logs

Click the Logs button.

You’ll then see the Log Search screen with results populated below. The default Query Rule will show all email received for the previous 1 week. You can click in each rule field and select options to be as specific as you need or add additional query rules.

You will be able to perform some actions on individual emails within this log screen – but if you want to release emails from quarantine, or other Spam actions you should visit the Spam quarantine log instead.

SpamExperts is only available when you use Mulberry Design Studio’s Hosting for your email.

Depending on where your domain is registered and your website hosted you may need to alter different parts of the SpamExperts system to ensure your mail is filtered correctly and reaches your mailbox.

To ensure your domain’s email is being filtered, your MX records should point to Mulberry Design Studio’s MX servers. This is the case whether your domain is registered with Mulberry Design Studio’s Hosting or not, so you will need to do this at your domain registrar or wherever you manage your DNS. By default, new domains purchased from Mulberry Design Studio are configured with the correct settings.

Mulberry Design Studio’s mail servers are:

mx1.uksrv.co.uk

mx2.uksrv.co.uk

These mail servers pass all inbound email to Mulberry Design Studio’s SpamExperts cluster, where it is scanned before being passed on to your cPanel server where the messages are routed into your individual mailboxes.

Every cPanel account enjoys customised settings for SpamExperts to help adapt it to your specific requirements.

In the scenario where all your Services (Domain, Hosting, Email) are with Mulberry Design Studio Hosting then SpamExperts should work for you with no additional configuration.

If you’ve just moved to Mulberry Design Hosting, then your DNS records may not yet be set correctly. You can follow our guides on this (content coming soon) to complete this task.

Then you should check that the correct SpamExperts Destination is configured to direct scanned email to your cPanel server. This guide also applies if you host your website elsewhere.

SpamExperts is a very intelligent spam filtering service using many factors to determine if an incoming message is safe, including

• Greylisting – This is a technique that presents the sending mail server with a special test that most spam servers will fail. More information on Greylisting is available in this SolarWinds article (external link opens in a new window).
• Real time black lists (RBLs) – SpamExperts inspects publicly available black lists of known spammy servers.
• Content analysis – SpamExperts inspects the contents of the email messages including attachments to determine if the message is spam.
• SPF and DKIM testing – SPF and DKIM are advanced opt-in techniques used by many mail servers to authenticate outgoing email. SPF relies on the DNS system to identify which mail servers are authorised to send email. DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) uses cryptographic techniques to “sign” outgoing mail. More details on how to set DKIM & SPF up on your Smart Hosting can be found here.

This article will show you how to access SpamExperts and check your spam quarantine logs. You may need to do this if you believe some emails you are expecting are being incorrectly marked as spam.

Click the ‘Spam quarantine’ button

You’ll now be in the Log Search screen with a pre-set Query rule to show any emails with a status of Quarantined

You can change the columns displayed, and also how the results are grouped by selecting from the appropriate drop-downs. There are also two quick-select options; Accepted and Not accepted – clicking these will populate the rule with appropriate terms for those searches. You can click in each rule field and select options to be as specific as you need.

It’s in this view that you can also perform various actions with each email – including releasing, or releasing and training them from quarantine.

Click the drop-down on the left hand end of the email line to access these options.

MX (Mail eXchanger) DNS records tell sending email servers about the correct receiving servers to use for mail addressed to your domain.

This guide assumes that you are logged into cPanel and that the domain concerned is already a parked, add-on or the primary domain.

MX records require a Priority and a Destination.

Priority – this number allows you to determine the order of preference for your MX Destinations. It only becomes relevant when you have more than a single MX record. The lowest Priority record should be the first port of call when another mail server tries to send email into your domain. A better way to think of Priority is cost – the lowest cost option will always be chosen first. It doesn’t really matter what numbers you use – it’s the numerical order of them that is important – but it’s most common to use increments of 5 or 10 to allow room for changes if necessary.

Destination – must be an FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name) e.g. mx1.example.co.uk – not just a hostname e.g. mx1. That is to say, it must be resolvable by the public DNS to an IP address. IP addresses are NOT allowed as MX destinations.

Mulberry Design Studio Hosting’s default MX records

mx1.uksrv.co.uk – priority 10

mx2.uksrv.co.uk – priority 20

Accessing your MX records

MX Records for a domain can be accessed via cPanel > Domains > Zone Editor

We have a separate guide on using the cPanel Zone Editor.

MX Records can be added for a domain by simply clicking + MX Record – but to view or edit existing MX records click Manage next to the domain you wish to view.

You can use the Filter to only show MX records. You can then Edit, Delete or Add new MX records as required.

Determine Email Routing

cPanel > Email > Email Routing

Please note setting the Email Routing in cPanel is different and separate from setting the SpamExperts Destination (previously called SpamExperts Route) – we have another article linked at the end of this one to help with checking and setting the SpamExperts Destination.

Normally, your MX records will be configured to route your incoming mail via our SpamExperts mail filtering system (mx1.krystal.co.uk and mx2.krystal.co.uk). In this case, you should have your Email Routing set to Local Mail Exchanger, as shown.

Do NOT use Automatically Detect Configuration – despite it saying recommended it does not work correctly and you’re mail will likely end up not being delivered.

Ensure the internal SpamExperts Destination is correct

Setting your MX records to mx1.krystal.co.uk and mx2.krystal.co.uk will direct incoming mail to our spam filtering system, but you must also ensure that the filtering system knows which Krystal server to deliver your cleaned email to. You do this by adjusting the Delivery Destination in SpamExperts.

The SpamExperts Destination defines the server where scanned email is delivered – it should be set to your home server – you can find this detail in your welcome email.

You may need to update the SpamExperts Destination if you change your DNS A record to point away from Mulberry Design Studio – for example if you are using a CDN like Cloudflare.

Managing Destinations

Click the Destinations icon

Initially the following screen will likely show no routes. Click the ‘Show Results’ button

You should now see the destination list – and hopefully it’ll show your home server. If it does show your home server then your destination is set correctly.

If this does not show the correct server you can either click + Add a destination to add a new one – entering the Priority as 0, the correct home server name and Port 25; or you can Edit the existing record – click the drop-down icon and select Edit.

If you add a new record first you will then need to Remove any other records – again, by clicking the drop-down next to the old record and clicking Remove.

If you make any alterations to these Destinations you should make sure to Clear the Callout Cache to ensure your changes take effect immediately.

When SpamExperts tries to deliver and email but gets rejected for whatever reason it records the fact. In future, SpamExperts will automatically reject messages sent to this mailbox without checking your cPanel account for several hours. This is to minimise network traffic. This list is not maintained forever, and is mainly there to prevent hammering by spammers.

This can be caused if you recently moved a domain to us, and someone tried to send email to you before you had configured your mailbox in cPanel, or if SpamExperts Destinations were set incorrectly – so the server scanned email was being directed to didn’t have a mailbox configured.

So, it’s important in these circumstances to clear the callout cache so any changes you’ve made to correct Destinations are taken into account immediately.

Clearing the Callout Cache

Click the Clear Callout cache – incoming icon.

Then click the Clear button.

You’ll see a success message – the cache is cleared. Please re-test inbound email to confirm it is now being successfully received.
